I wanna talk to guys!
Let me just say this first:
I am a die-hard Evil Dead fan. Absolutely adore the series and have dug around every single corner of the internet reading about it. The dedication the creative team behind Evil Dead put into it is absolutely inspiring and that’s one of the main reasons that I just fucking love this film and it’s followers.
When I first heard about the remake, I was extremely skeptical about it. Especially when I heard Diablo Cody was on board. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore Diablo’s writing, but I felt it wasn’t appropriate for the film.
After seeing the bootleg trailer that premiered at NYCC, I did a complete 360 with my feelings for this film. Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell all said they were going in a slightly different direction with this film but when I saw it, it truly felt like an Evil Dead film to me, just with a bigger budget and more stunning visually.
All these people getting riled up that there is no “Ash” and it is now “Mia”, I want you to know that the short film that made Evil Dead happen had a female protagonist. Also, Bruce has even said that he is ready to pass the crown on to Jane as the new “Ash.” Apparently this girl had it just as bad on set as Bruce did. Luckily for her there were no sprained ankles and sticks involved!
Jane also addressed in an interview at NYCC that this is not some new-age torture porn flick. In fact, there’s absolutely no sex in the film whatsoever! She’s said that it is just straight horror.
Now one thing that really beats the shit out of me — all these people getting fucking worked up over the tree scene. Even if Raimi did regret putting it in the film, you cannot deny that scene is iconic. I really, really hate that people are all like “IT’S SO MISOGYNISTIC AND SEXIST.”
IT’S A FUCKING TREE! I’m sure you wouldn’t be saying the same thing if it was some guy getting raped by a tree. And at least it isn’t some sane guy that decides to rape her. I’ve heard no complaints from people about The Last House on the Left or I Spit On Your Grave. So rape is okay when it’s a main plot point, right?
As a rape victim, I’d just like to say: get the fuck over yourself. It’s a god damn tree. It’s the most unrealistic thing I’ve ever heard of.
There’s so much more I’d like to say, but if you’d like to counter any of my arguments, just let me know. I’m sure I have several more mouthfuls.
